FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is metallurgical and microstructural analysis?
Metallurgical and microstructural analysis involves examining the internal structure, grain size, phases, inclusions, surface conditions, and heat-treatment characteristics of a material. These studies help determine why a component failed, how it was processed, and whether it meets required standards.
We analyze all metallic materials, including steel, aluminum, copper alloys, nickel alloys, cast irons, and specialty alloys. We also evaluate coated materials, heat-treated samples, and failure components from various industries.

We use a range of techniques, including:

  • Optical microscopy
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM/EDS)
  • Metallography (sample preparation, polishing, etching)
  • Hardness testing
  • Grain size measurements (ASTM E112)
  • Phase analysis and inclusion evaluation

Turnaround times depend on sample complexity. Standard microstructural evaluations typically take 2–5 business days, while failure investigations or SEM studies may take longer. Expedited service is available upon request.

No special preparation is required. Simply provide the material or failed component. Our laboratory will handle cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching as needed.
